Just in for spring: 2019 home design trends

If you’re like most people, the change of seasons from winter to spring and summer provide added incentive to refresh your living spaces. From minor changes like a fresh coat of paint, to major renovations like adding a deck, the warmer weather is the perfect time to make things happen around your home.

Looking for some inspiration? Here are some of the latest home design trends we’re seeing in 2019.

Dark and light

While the majority of homes in New England have light exteriors, often with a darker trim or shutters, a shift is underway. Regardless of the material, we’re seeing more dark exteriors—think charcoal gray, deep burgundy, dark brown—popping up. These colors offer an elegant alternative to lighter colors, and work well on a wide variety of home styles. While white is the traditional trim color for a dark exterior, black trim is now being used as a more contemporary option.

On the flip side, interior wall paint colors are trending lighter with warm whites, grays and soft washes of color. These gentle shades provide a calming feel in any room. In larger rooms, consider painting one accent wall a few shades deeper than the rest to add depth and contrast.

Inside out and outside in

The versatility of our outside spaces continues to rise. You’ve heard about creating outdoor “rooms” in yards and sunrooms and on decks and porches to maximize your living space during the warmer months. With modern decking materials and a range of other options, such as pergolas and gazebos, you are only limited by your imagination. Beyond a table and chairs for dining al fresco, homeowners are now adding comfortable outdoor living spaces with bars, fireplaces, and even TV and movie screens.

The reverse is also true as we invite nature into our interior spaces. Adding natural, organic elements and colors inside your home helps both your indoor and outdoor areas blend more seamlessly. Wood accents and finishes—from floors to walls and ceilings—provide a more natural look and a lot of warmth. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors let in an abundance of natural light and ease the transition from indoors to out.
